Twenty years after the first tashas opened in Johannesburg, South Africa, the much-loved premium café continues its global journey – now with a new home in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. tashas, the beloved café concept known for its timeless interiors and sophisticated comfort food, is proud to announce the opening of its newest location at Cavendish Square in Claremont.

Nestled in the heart of Claremont, Cavendish Square is a cornerstone of the Southern Suburbs – an area celebrated for its leafy streets, heritage homes, and strong sense of community. The mall itself is a hub of fashion, culture, and dining, making it the perfect setting for tashas’ latest café.
Design that feels like home
Crafted with timeless materials such as marble, brass, and timber, the interiors at tashas Cavendish balance sophistication with ease. Every detail – from the layered joinery to the hand-embossed paper installation – has been thoughtfully considered to embody the essence of tashas: beautifully designed, deeply personal, and always generous in spirit.
Inspired by the original Johannesburg-based tashas café, Atholl, that opened 20 years ago, the new location features intricate mosaic flooring, high-gloss stucco walls, and rich chocolate-hued timber offset by brass accents. A hand-embossed paper installation by artist Elonah O’Neil floats in the centre of the room, suspended by gold wire and designed to move gently with the breeze – an elegant nod to the tactile and ephemeral.
Bronze details by Bronze Age add subtle texture, while works by contemporary South African artists lend authenticity and local flair. The indoor and outdoor dining terrace, seating 45 guests, offers a welcoming environment that balances sophistication with comfort.
“Marble, timber and brass have been used extensively throughout the space – from the intricate mosaic tiles on the floor to the delicious chocolate-coloured timber on the walls,” says Nicky Greig, Head Stylist for Tashas Group. “The result is a dining room that feels both elevated and effortless.”
A menu rooted in nostalgia and neighbourhood charm
While there is a golden thread that runs through every tashas location, each one is unique – drawing inspiration from a place or a time that comes to life through both the menu and the design. tashas Cavendish is no exception, reflecting the easy charm of suburban Cape Town in both its interiors and its Inspired By menu*.
tashas Cavendish upholds the group’s philosophy of fresh food made to order with the highest-quality ingredients, offering generous, uncomplicated dishes that are both nostalgic and elevated. The Inspired By menu celebrates the spirit of neighbourhood dining, while the Classic Menu anchors the experience in timeless, comforting plates that feel familiar but refined.
In addition, the Inspired By menu draws from the spirit of the suburbs, where the pace is slower and meals are shared.
“Our menu is designed to celebrate familiar favourites with a healthier touch, and it captures the essence of neighbourhood dining: unfussy, generous, and rooted in nostalgia,” Jill Okkers, Culinary Director for Tashas Group, explains.

- Protein Pancakes with maple bacon, almond and maple yoghurt, caramelised banana, pecan crumb and almond and tahini dress
- Green Goddess Tuna on Kale Grain Loaf
- Crispy Rice Salad with herbs, spring onion, gem lettuce, cucumber, cashew nuts, chilli lemongrass sauce, coconut satay dressing, sesame seeds & Japanese mayo
- Prawn Curry
